The SheyGompa festival is a significant of religious celebration that takes place once every 12 years in the remote region of Dolpa, Nepal. This festival holds immense cultural and religious importance for the local people and visitors from all over the world.
Dolpo is a secluded and picturesque valley nestled in the Himalayan Mountains, known for its rugged terrain, ancient monasteries, and rich Tibetan Buddhist heritage. SheyMonastery (Gomba) is one of the most revered monasteries in the region and serves as the focal point for the festival. The festival is celebrated in honor of the ritual of Kora (circumambulating). The Holy Crystal Mountain was instituted by an ascetic from Tibet by the name of DrupthopSingheYeshi, who, according to mythology, rode a snow lion to triumph over the evil spirits and demons of Crystal Mountain (Shey-RiwoDrukta). DruptopSingyeYeshi is believed to have meditated in the caves surrounding SheyGompa, bestowing blessings of enlightenment upon the land and its people.
Every 12 years of the Tibetan calendar a ceremony is held at Shey. It has been practiced for centuries. It has been a ritual of the Dolpo people. Along with the time now, it is celebrated more as a festival than a ritual. The Tibetan calendar represents 12 years by 12 different animals. Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog and Pig. Every year has its specific pilgrims. For example, BoudhanathStupa is in the year of Bird,Swoyambhunath is in the year of Monkey, Jamacho is in the year of Ox, Namobuddha is in the year of Tiger, and BuddhaRibo is in the year of Rabbit, MountKailash in the year of Horse and Crystal Mountain in the year of Dragon.
The last festival was held in September 2012 year of Dragon. This time, it will be held in 2024 after 12 years. It is a very auspicious festival where all the Dolpo will gather at an auspicious place at an auspicious time and almost all Dolpo will definitely do their best to attend an auspicious festival. Every year this festival gets more attention due to its uniqueness and authenticity. Now tourist people around the world are waiting for the festivals.The festival starts on the 16th of September in 2024. 16th is the opening ceremony and many pujas and blessing speeches will be delivered by different renowned Lama and Rinpoche. There will be dance, singing, and, drama performances from different schools of Upper Dolpo. On the 17th there will be a performance of villagers, games, archery and many more.
Similarly, the 18th the full moon is the main auspicious day. On this particular, the people will go to offer walk around (Kora) to Crystal Mountain with packed lunch. It will take a whole day to complete a round to Crystal Mountain. Some people prefer to make a round barefoot. In Buddhism, there is a belief that doing Kora barefoot will wash your sins. Similarly, people take the crystal from the mountains or stone to their hometown as a blessing or gift from Crystal Mountain. People dance on top of the mountain and enjoy it to the fullest. On the way, you get to visit TsakhangGompa one the oldest Gompa in Dolpo. The Gompa is built on the rock wall. Still, Gomchen (Meditator) practices Buddhism and prays for world peace.

You fly in Kathmandu through the amazing view of tall and snow covered mountains. Our representative will be waiting outside to receive and welcome. Transfer you to the designated hotel with private vehicle and will be helping you for the check in at Hotel. She/he will collectthe passport to issue for the permit. Freshen up, self-exploring to the historic Kathmandu.
Day 2 : Issuing Restricted Area’s Permits and Preparation for trek
After breakfast, Kathmandu sightseeing begins to discover world heritage sites of Kathmandu Valley by car/van. Our guide takes you to the vibrant streets of city, cultural and historic of Pashupatinath Templeand BouddhanathStupa. After sightseeing, you will be back to hotel and organize meeting about trip. You spent rest of the day for gear shopping, packaging, exploring of Thamel and enjoying delicious local foods.
Day 3 : Kathmandu – Pokhara (822m) 25/30mins
Starting the day relax and slow morning. Our driver and guide will pick up you from the hotel and drive towards the airport, proceed for the security check-in. Board the flight and the duration will be approximately 25-30 minutes and you will arrive Pokhara.Drive to the hotel and check-in to your hotel and freshen up. Head out to explore the lakeside. You can take a boat ride on the lake and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding Annapurna mountain range.
If possible, visit the International Mountain Museum, which provides insights into the culture, geology, and mountaineering history of the Himalaya. It’s a fascinating place to learn about the mountains and the Sherpa culture. Day 4 : Pokhara –Jomsom – trek to Phalek (3175m) 4hrs
You will have an early morning flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. The flight duration is approximately 20-25 minutes, and it offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Arrival in Jomsom, collect your backpacks and prepare for the trek to Phalek. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies, including water, snacks, and appropriate trekking gear. Start your trek from Jomsom towards Phalek. The trek will take you through scenic landscapes, traditional villages, and along the Kali Gandaki River. Youwill definitely enjoy the beauty of the Mustang region, known for its unique landscapes, barren hills, and Tibetan-influenced culture. You will arrive at Phalek in the evening. Start your trek early from Phalek and enjoying breakfast and prepare yourself for the trek to Santa. Make sure you have enough water, snacks, and appropriate trekking gear. Begin your trek from Phalek towards Santa. The trail will take you through diverse landscapes, including picturesque valleys, view of mountains and charming villages.
The trail involves some uphill and downhill sections. Around midday, find a suitable spot for a picnic lunch. You can sit back, relax, and savor your packed meal while immersing yourself in the serene environment of the mountains. Resume your trek from the lunch spot and continue towards Santa. Day 6 : Santa – GaldanGuldun (4247m) 5/6hrs
Start your trek early from Santa after enjoying a heavy breakfast and trek to GaldanGuldun. After ensuring each trekkerhas own necessary supplies for the day.Trek from Santa to GaldanGuldun. The trail will take you through diverse terrain, including meadows and rocky paths. Follow the trail guide and signs to stay on the right path. Enjoy the crisp mountain air, the sound of birds chirping, and the stunning views of the Himalayan landscape and find a suitable spot for a midday break and have a delicious lunch. After taking a moment to rest, refuel, and soak in the tranquility of the mountains. Enjoy the panoramic views and the serenity of the surroundings. Then continue your trek towards GaldanGuldun. GaldanGuldun is a picturesque village surrounded by mountains, offering a peaceful and remote setting. Our team will settle down the camp and enjoy your comfortable tented camping.
Day 7 : GaldanGuldun – Nulungsumda(4987m) via Jungbenla Pass (5550m) 7hrs
Start your trek very early fromGaldanGuldun. After breakfast, pack your trekking essentials for a day including warm clothing, sufficient water, snacks and sunscreen. Start your trek from GaldanGuldun, following the trail towards Jungbenla Pass. The trail will gradually ascend, passing through alpine meadows, rocky terrain, and possibly snow-covered sections as you gain elevation.Catch your own pace carefully and adjust your pace accordingly. We will stop at a suitable spot for a rest and enjoy a packed lunch. Continue your trek towards Jungbenla Pass after the lunch break. As you ascend further, the trail may become steeper and more challenging. Be cautious and maintain a steady pace, taking small steps to conserve energy. We are approaching high-altitude JungbenlaPass; the landscape might transition into rugged and rocky terrain. Be careful while navigating these sections and be mindful of your footing.
Once you reach the summit of Jungbenla Pass at an altitude of 5550m, take a moment to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Then continue your descent from Jungbenla Pass towards Nulungsumda. The trail will lead you through a combination of rocky sections, loose scree, snow patches, take your time while descending to ensure stability and minimize the risk of slipping or falling. Use trekking poles for support and maintain a controlled pace.Arrive in Nulungsumda in the late afternoon or early evening. Nulungsumda is a picturesque valley amidst the mountains, offering a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
Day 8 : Nulungsumda – Charka (4302m) 6/7hrs

Nulungsumda to Charka trek is an adventurous journey through the remote and rugged terrain of the Himalaya. The trail will take you through breathtaking landscapes, including rocky terrain, river crossings, and high mountain passes. Follow your pace and maintain a steady rhythm as you traverse the challenging terrain. After taking short break when you are inneed, allowing you to rest and hydrate adequately. Arrive in Charka Bhot in the late afternoon or early evening. Charka Bhot is a traditional village situated amidst the mountains, offering a glimpse into the local culture and lifestyle.
Day 9 : Rest Day (4302m)
After having a late breakfast, explore the village and Bon Monastery to understand better the way of life and importance of cultural and traditional. Walk through the village and take a time to immerse yourself to the beautiful landscapes, with stunning surrounding mountains and valleys and the old Bon Stupa along the way and make sure you get the memorizing rest day.Enjoying the freshly cooked lunch and relax, take a time to refresh your body. If needed, do the laundry and free afternoon where you can do self-exploring of the village without guide, surely you will have wonderful experience.
Day 10 : Charka – Rapka (4500m)via Mola pass (5030m) 5/6hrs
StartTrek early from Charka. After having delicious breakfast and ensure you have all the necessary supplies for the day. Trek following the trail that leads towards Mola Pass which will gradually ascend, taking you through diverse landscapes, including rocky terrain, alpine meadows, and maintain a steady pace and take regular breaks to rest and hydrate. It’s important to acclimatize to the altitude and listen to your body throughout the trek. Reaching the summit of Mola Pass at an altitude of 5030m, take a moment to celebrate your achievement and capture the panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Day 17 : 1st Day of SheyGompa Festival (opening ceremony) (4343m)
The grand celebration will start with prayers and blessing speech by the renowned Rinpoche’s and Lamas. The local inhabitants, monks from various monasteries, participate in the festivities, making it a truly vibrant and spiritually charged event. There will be dance, singing, picnic lunch and traditional dance by older people. You will return to camp and enjoying the culture, people, nature, landscapes, yaks, horses, etc.
Day 18 : 2nd Day of festival (4343m)
During the Sheygompa festival, devotees and pilgrims undertake arduous journeys to reach the monastery. They come from different parts of Nepal, as well as from neighboring Tibet, to witness and participate in the scared rituals. Many pilgrims also bring offering such as butter lamps, prayer flags, and religious artifacts to the present to the monastery and seek blessings. All the villagers performed famous horse racing and archery. Early evening, they will perform traditional dance and singing to entertain the visitors who have come from far distance.
Day 19 : 3rd Day of festival Full moon (Kora) 4343m
You will be joining the local people for the tour to the crystal mountain. This is also the important factor of the festival. It is believe that crystal mountain is place where actually, Buddhist master have walk through. Preserving the tradition of ancestors’ means, they value it lot more than it looks like. The kora will take probably, 5-6 hours of walk. Clad in vibrant costumes and ornate masks representing deities, demons, and various mythical figures, the dancers engage in intricate and symbolic movements to enact ancient Buddhist stories and teachings. The dance is accompanied by traditional music and chanting, creating an enchanting and mesmerizing atmosphere. Enjoy the day at festival and interact with local people to understand it more deeply. Your trek from Sallaghari will follow the trail that leads towards Phoksundo Lakeside Village. The trail may involve a combination of ascents, descents, and traversing through diverse landscapes with the scenic beauty of the surroundings, including lush forests, rugged terrain, and panoramic views of the mountains. You will find a spot for lunch and enjoy a packed lunch. Continue your trek after the lunch break towards Phoksundo Lake. Arrive at Phoksundo Lake in the late afternoon or early evening. Phoksundo is renowned for its stunning turquoise lake and traditional Tibetan-style houses. Evening you will take some time to explore the village, interact with the locals, and appreciate the unique culture and architecture.
Day 24 : Exploring day at Rigmo Village / Rest day (3640m)
Start your day with a leisurely breakfast in PhoksundoRigmo village. Take in the serene atmosphere and prepare yourself for a day of exploration. Begin by exploring PhoksundoRigmo Village itself. Take a stroll through the narrow alleys and soak in the unique architecture of the traditional Tibetan-style houses.Engage with the friendly locals, learn about their way of life, and immerse yourself in the local culture. Observe their daily activities and gain insights into the traditional practices that have been preserved for generations. Make your way to the ancient Bon Monastery, which is approximately 6000 years old and holds significant cultural and religious importance. Marvel at the architectural beauty and intricate details of the monastery. Explore the interior of the monastery, where you may find ancient artifacts, religious relics, and stunning murals depicting Tibetan Buddhist and Bon teachings. Take time for quiet contemplation and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this sacred place. Take a break for lunch in a local eatery or enjoy a picnic amidst the natural beauty surrounding the village. Rest, refuel, and relax before continuing your exploration. After lunch, head towards the breathtaking Phoksundo Lake, located near the village. This turquoise-colored lake is one of the main highlights of the region. As you approach the lake, the mesmerizing views will leave you in awe. Spend time walking along the shores of the lake, taking photographs, and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. Observe the reflections of the snow-capped peaks in the crystal-clear waters of the lake.
Day 25 : Rigmo village – Chhepka (2678m) 5/6hrs
Start your trek early fromRigmo after having a delicious breakfast and make sure you have all the necessary supplies for the day. Your trek from Rigmo Village will follow the trail that leads towards Chhepka. The trail may involve a mix of ascents, descents, and traversing through diverse landscapes whih including picturesque valley, meandering rivers, and traditional villages along the way. Lunch at a suitable spot village called Rechi. Continue your trek after the lunch break towards Chhepka. Arrive at Chhepka in the late afternoon or early evening. Chhepka is a charming traditional village nestled amidst the mountains and is known for its warm hospitality.
Day 26 : Chhepka – Shulighat (3/4hrs) – drive jeep to Jhupal (2475m)
Start your trek early from Chhepka, after having adelicious breakfast and ensure you have all your belongings ready for the journey towards Shulighat. Follow the trail that leads you through scenic landscapes, crossing rivers and forests. Reach Sulighat, which is located on the banks of a Beri river. This is the point where you will transition from trekking to a jeep ride and drive to Jhupalhich will be take 30mins. Reach Jhupal, a small town located in the Dolpa district.
Day 27 : Jhupal – Nepalgunj- Kathmandu with connecting flight (1400m)
Early wake up, arrive to the Jhupal airport. Board the flight to Nepalgunj, which is closest major city with an airport. The flight will take you to Nepalgunj in 35 minutes. Arrive Nepalgunj, procced to the domestic terminal and complete any necessary transfer procedures, grab some snack, or explore the facilities while waiting for connecting flight. Check-in for your connecting flight to Kathmandu. Board the flight and enjoy the stunning view as you make your way back to the capital city Kathmandu. The flight duration will be 1hour approximately. Arrive at airport in Kathmandu, receive your luggage and exit the airport.
Day 28 : Departure from Kathmandu
Today as per your international flight time. Our MysticKailash Adventure tour manager will transfer you to the airport for your final departure from this amazing country, Nepal.
